Act now for the right to believe:   write to David Cameron

At an Easter reception in 10 Downing Street for Christian leaders – including an Open Doors representative – the Prime Minister urged them to work with the government to make sure that the Arab Spring did not lead to increased persecution of Christians. Mr Cameron said that now is "a really important moment...to persuade these newly democratising countries not to persecute minorities and to respect Christians' right to practise their religion."

Campaigning: you can make a difference

In 2010, over 400,000 people from more than 70 different countries signed an Open Doors petition to say YES to Freedom of Religion and NO to the concept of defamation of religions. In 2011, for the first time for many years there was NO resolution on defamation of religions proposed at the United Nations General Assembly. Open Doors celebrates this news from New York as a wonderful vindication of their 2010 Right to Believe campaign.

The UK Foreign Office and the right to believe

An Open Doors representative was at the recent launch of ‘Human Rights and Democracy: The 2011 Foreign and Commonwealth Office Report’. The report outlines the FCO’s work on human rights throughout 2011 and sets aims for 2012.

It accepts that the Arab Spring led to ‘increased harassment and persecution of religious minorities’, and indicates that ‘protecting religious freedoms and preventing discrimination on grounds of religion or belief are priority human rights issues for the UK Government’.
